Website Evaluation â⬠Apple Store
Website Evaluation ââ¬â Apple Store In the recent years, electronic business becomes more widespread, and rapidly growing in the whole world. Because of the cost efficiency and coverage, many companies build a website to sell their products on the Internet. One of the most famous worldwide consumer electronic company, Apple Inc. also established an online store which called Apple Store (http://store.apple.com) to sell different products on the Internet from 1997 (Technical Update, 1997). The website is widely use in buying the products of Apple Inc. by the customers in worldwide. Therefore, the quality of the website has to be good enough for to numbers of customers. This essay is going to evaluate, discuss and conclude about the Apple Store and its e-commerce operation by using different methods of evaluation. Website Purpose Outline Company Background Apple Inc. is one of the biggest consumer electronic and computer company in the world. It provides many famous hardware products including the iPhone, the iPod series, the iPad and the Mac hardware products to different types of customers (Apple Inc. Annual Report, 2010). The company sells its products in more than 300 retail stores in various countries from 2010 (Spence, 2010). Other than the website and the retail store, Apple Inc. sells its products by wholesalers, retailers from other company, direct sales force, third-party cellular network carriers, and value added resellers at the same time (Apple Inc. Annual Report, 2010). Website Functions Apple Store is a website provides various services to customers, which are products description, software download, products selling and after sales services. Product Description Finding and filtering information for the customers is important to a successful electronic system since the customers would like to find the products and services in the easiest way (Ng, Yan and Lim, 2000). Therefore, a good e-business website must have a good production description. Apple Store describes the information of different products in detail for the customers understanding the functions and usefulness of the products. Diverse products like the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac hardware products, software and accessories are being introduced by words, videos and pictures in different languages in the website. For the iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apples computers, those features, outlook and technical specifications is being showed in the site. The website even uses video to explain how to use the products in detail to attract the consumers. At the same time, in every description page we can see a Buy Now button which is a link to the product selling part to make the purchasing process easier (Apple Store, 2010). Software Download Apple Store provides many types of software for different products. There are both free and paid software for the customers to better use their hardware products. Like many software production companies, customers can choose to buy the software in the normal stores or on the online store. And the software update can be found on the website for providing new features and fixing the bugs on the products. Also, the software can be downloaded in various languages in the world. Product Selling The online Apple Store is a channel of product selling to various customers in the world. Customers can buy anything which can be bought in the Apple retail store including hardware, Apple software, third party software and selected third party accessories on the website. They even can buy the certified refurbished products and the old type products which cannot be bought in the normal store on the online store in a cheaper than normal price (Apple Store, 2010). For the customers who buy the goods on the Apple online store, they can buy the goods on installments without interest. After Sales Services The Apple Inc. provides many after sales services to the customers if they bought the products on the Apple Store. They can check the delivery status on the website in order to know the process of delivery. When the customers take the product to repair in the repair department of Apple, they can check the repair status on the site. And they can get support if they have any problem of using the product. The website provides many product using problem solutions to the users (Apple Store, 2010). Therefore, the customers can get help easily from the Apple store website if they have any problem. Website Analyses Web Accessibility Users with disabilities have to use the website. Therefore, a good website should be able to let them to utilize it easily. Web Accessibility is a standard for checking that whether the users with disabilities can perceive, follow, control, communicate with and contribute to the website (W3C, 2005). For a website, if it is sufficiently flexible to be used by all of assistive technologies, it can be called as an accessible website (Slatin Rush, 2003). For the Apple Store, web accessibility will be evaluated by whether the website has the essential components if it is accessible to people with disabilities (W3C, 2005). In content, the basic text and images introduce the product and the purchasing instruction. For the people who have blurry vision, they cannot read unless the text is very large (Thatcher, 2005, P. 3). By the way, the text size and color cannot be change in each page in the Apple Store website. The minor visual disability people cannot change the text size to what they need when they want to see that page. However, for the product introduction, the Apple Store uses some videos to introduce the major functions and special features of the products, the visual disability people, even the blindness who is completely sightless (Paciello, 2000, P.8), can know more about the product by listening the voice in the videos. But for the auditory people, there is no subtitle in the videos for them to understand what is about on the video. At the same time, for the visual disability people who want to make transaction in the website, there is no instruction video or audio about the process of transaction for those people who need it. And even in the transaction page, no access for the visual disability people to make a transaction. Therefore, Apple Store does not provide enough access to disability people. Webqual 2.0 Research Design Finding the domain which can reflect the situation in reality is better than doing artificial laboratory-based experiment (Barnes Vidgen, 2001). By the way, only analyze one data about the domain is not enough for the website evaluation. Therefore, compare the domain with the major competitors is the best way to evaluate the quality of the website. In the market, there are many competitors of Apple having an online store to sell consumer electronic products (Apple Inc. Annual Report, 2010). The major competitors which are chosen to be evaluated with Apple Store are the Sony Style online store (http://www.sonystyle.com), and the HP online store (http://www.shopping.hp.com). The reasons why those websites are being chosen to be compared are because both of them are selling consumer electronic and computer products. At the same time, both three of them are recommended by the UK consumers (Satmetrix, 2010). Sony is the biggest multinational conglomerate corporation in Japanese. It is one of the leading company of selling consumer electronic and computer products. Playstation, Sony music products and Sony laptops are some example of the famous electronic product of Sony (Sony Style, 2010). Sony Style online store is a channel of distribution on the Internet. HP (Hewlett-Packard) is another major competitor of consumer electronic and computer products of Apple Inc. It is a multinational information technology corporation in USA which is famous by its computer products. HP is famed for selling different types of hardware product. Methodology 40 questionnaires have been done from the user of Internet in the worldwide. Questions in the questionnaires are distributed to different countries, different age and different gender people by Internet. The questionnaire is mainly divided into 2 parts to measure those three websites quality and their view of the importance of the criteria. First part is about their basic information, which is about their age group, gender, and most importantly, whether they have visited those three websites. The data of the interviewees who have not visited those websites are not going to be count in the analysis. The second part is different descriptions of the websites. Each of them uses the scale 1 to 5 to elaborate the interviewees agreeability of the descriptions (Barnes Vidgen, 2001). And the description importance for evaluation is also asked in the questionnaire, in order to know how they feel about the importance of those descriptions. Data Analysis In the 40 interviewees, 28 of them have visited those Apple Store, Sony Style online store and HP online store. Therefore, only this 28 interviewees questionnaire results are being counted in the analysis. All data which are collected are summarized in Table 1 in the appendix page. The marks counted are the average marks of the 28 interviewees in each question. All marks are round up to 2 decimal places for evaluation conveniently. According to Barnes, the Webqual can be divided into different categories in SERVQUAL which are tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy (Barnes Vidgen, 2001). They are going to be the criteria to see how the quality of those three websites is. Importance of specific question for user At the beginning, the importance of each description is going to be analyzed first. From the table, we can see the average marks of importance in different descriptions are quite high. Therefore, most of the descriptions of Webqual are important for the interviewees. In aesthetics, the interviewees think having a good outlook is quite important to them (Description 1). It can attract them to stay in the website for a longer time. However, having an appropriate design and audio-visual effect (Descriptions 2, 3) are not as important as other criteria, since they are not the critical element for them to stay in the website. Then, reliable (Descriptions 4-6), responsiveness (Descriptions 7-8), competence (Descriptions 9-10), credibility (Descriptions 14-15), and security (Descriptions 16-17) are quite important for the website users. It is because both of the criteria are about the safety of the transaction on that website. The users of website most concern the trust and dependability of it (Jones, Wllikens, Morris and Masera, 2000). However, for navigation (Descriptions 11-13), whether the websites are easy to find and to return to and find your way around are not important for the interviewees. Only the website has things where they expect to find them is important for the interviewees. Whether the website is easy to give feedback (Description 18) is quite important for the interviewees. For the empathy of the website, websites are quite good in communication (Descriptions 19-21) and their understanding the individual (Descriptions 22-24) are not as important as others. Descriptions Comparison between Three Websites Referring to Table 1, the evaluation of interviewees can show the differences between those three websites. In terms of aesthetics, the users think that the Apple Store looks much better than the Sony Style online store and HP online store. As we can see in those websites, Apple Store provides more pictures and a better looking homepage between those three websites. At the same time, both of them have an appropriate style of design for site type. By the way, only Apple Store creates and audio-visual experience to the users. In the Apple Store website, there are some videos to introduce the major functions and special features of the products. So the Apple Store has a higher overall score of aesthetics. For the navigation, which is the description that the users thinks it is not that important, we can see Apple Store and Sony Style online store have a higher marks of whether it is easy to find and to return to and Apple Store gets a higher marks in it is easy to find your way around. It shows that the Apple Store is easier for the user to find and use. At the same time, the interviewees claim that the three websites have things what they expected to find them. For the reliability, the marks between three websites are quite similar. It is because both three website are run by big company, which are Apple, Sony and HP. They have to make their websites free from error in order to maintain their credibility. Only about the description about providing up-to-date information, Apple Store get a higher average marks between three websites. It is because after the press conference of the new products, the new products features will be updated immediately on the website next day while the other two websites do not do this kind of update. For the competence, interviewees think that those websites can provide them with professional and competent image and believe they can process transactions competently, again, because both three website are run by the big company. Professional and process transactions competently are important for the credibility for them. For responsiveness, HP online store gives a more clear time for delivery for products or services. It shows what the exact day is for the customers receive the product, while the Apple and Sony website only show the estimate day of delivery which is not enough for the customers. At the same time, the access of three websites is good for the interviewees, both of them are easy to give feedback or contact the company. By the way, for the credibility and security, Apple Store has a higher mark compare with other two websites. It is because the Apple website is more famous in dealing with online trading and many of the interviewees have done the transaction through Apple website. Therefore, it has a higher mark in compare with the two other websites. For the empathy, both websites does not have a good mark since the website does not convey this culture to the website users. In conclusion, Apple Store gets the highest marks between three websites in the evaluation. Therefore we can see Apple website is the best in the group of consumer products websites. E-commerce Operation Evaluation Value Creation model Value Creation is important for a company. According to Mathur and Kenyon, it is about the design of future competitive offerings for the financial success of a company (Mathur and Kenyon, 2001) and the company have to beat the competitor by the value creation (Phillips, 2003). Novelty Apple.com provides a feature that the customers can order the products in multiple configurations. They can customize what they buy on the website. For example, when a customer orders a Macbook Pro, he can choose the processor, memory, graphics card, hard drive he like. This feature is a novelty in the online store market when it was first revealed. It creates value by eliminating inefficiencies in buying process for the customers. Because the customers can chose the product configurations according to their personal needs. So it is easier for them to purchase on the Internet. Customers can buy certified refurbished products on the Apple online store. The certified refurbished products are the products which undergo a rigorous refurbishment process prior to being offered for sale in a price which is cheaper than the normal price. It creates value by creating entirely new markets which is the market of the customers who like buying cheaper product. At the same time, it can help the company to sell the refurbished products. And because it is selling on the official website, it is more reliable for the consumers. The Apple Store let the customers engraving their iPod if they make an order on the website. They can make some personalized words on their iPod by the laser engraving. The text will be engraved near the top, on the back of the iPod. Any different types of iPod can use this service if the customers buy the iPod on the apple website. It creates values by capturing latent consumer need which is personalized design of their iPod. Efficiency The Apple online store provides the consumers with efficiency in different aspects. First of all, the information asymmetries between the Apple online store and the buyer have be reduced since the website provides all information which the buyer need in deciding whether purchasing, including the price of all different product, all possible discount, the price of adding different customize part in the products. Unlike in the normal store, the buyers have enough information in making the decision on buying a product or not. Therefore, we can say the information asymmetries between each group have been reduced. At the same time, the searching and bargaining cost of the buyer has been reduced by using the Apple online store. They do not have to search in different store since the price of the Apple Store is unified in the market. Therefore, their decision making pace will be faster than in the normal store since they have enough information to making the purchasing decision. Complementarities Apple Store provides with vertical complementarities to the customers which are after sales services. On the website, when you login your purchasing account, many individual information about your purchasing can be shown on the webpage. Delivery status, repair status can be checked on the site. Then the buyers can easily organize the usage of their products after the purchase. If they have any problem of using the product, many supporting service are available on the website for the buyers. They can browse the instructions about the using problem on the website. And also read the guideline from the website. For the horizontal complementarities, in some promotion, the buyers can buy the computer with the printer of the partner firms. This cooperation between the company helps to create value that the customers can have the bundle of products and get the value create from the cooperation. Lock-In In the Apple online store, it provides many services that create value for the customers. For the customers who have purchased in the Apple online store, they will receive the email about the latest news about the store, which is about the latest products, latest software download or some news about the company. When the customers can see the email regularly, they will be locked in with the company. And the email have the link for the customers to know more further information about the new, which make some potential purchasing for the company. Also, personalization for the customers appears in the Apple online store. After the first transaction between the customer and Apple store, the customer can turn the one click ordering function in the website with entering the credit card and personal information in the website. The customer is then allowed to purchase anything on the Apple Store with single click on the website (Apple Store, 2010). This personalization service for the customers let them to purchase in the website easier and increase the sales of the Apple Store. Conclusion In conclusion, Apple Store is one of the best electronic business website. In the evaluation, we can see the website quality of Apple Store is on the top in between the competition. At the same time, it provides with values in different aspects. By the way, the web accessibility is not good enough for the use of disability. The company has to put more effort in this aspect. Euler and Hamiltonian Circuits
Euler and Hamiltonian Circuits As I type this sentence millions of students all over the country are in their math class either a) struggling to open their eyelids or b) tapping their fingers due to boredom and impatience. They have all failed to understand how the topic would later come of use. Although mathematics may seem to be ââ¬Å"unnecessaryâ⬠it teaches our brains to strategize, and think differently through the use of trial and error and problem solving. Most individuals consider mathematics to be a dreadful topic, and can never really comprehend how it can be beneficial in our lives on a daily basis. Most of the time, they may seem to be correct. However, they are not. Most of the time, we are using its strategies without even acknowledging it. We use it for almost anything we do: currency, measurement, time, etc. Two examples of math we use on a regular basis are Euler and Hamiltonian Circuits. An Euler Circuit is a circuit that reaches each edge of a graph exactly on ce. (Malkevitch, 8) This theory is named after Leonhard Euler, an outstanding mathematician during the 18th century. Euler had been the first person to study this category of circuits. In addition, he was the creator of the theory of graphs, or graph theory. One of the many things he had found was that most graphs do not have an Euler circuit at all. Euler had also contributed to the field of mathematics in various ways. He was a very creative individual, establishing more than 500 works throughout his lifetime. Euler had been considered a prodigy because he was working with the most complex mathematical calculations under the very poor conditions he lived in, and proceeded to work with these problems until he had become totally blind. Malkevitch, 9) According to Professor Clark Kimberling, some of the other things Euler had discovered or had named after him in his honor are: e (the calculus number), a,b,c (the side lengths of a triangle), f(x) (for functional value), R and r (the ci rcumradius and inradius of a triangle), sin x and cos x (values of sine and cosine functions), i (for the square root of -1), capital sigma (summation), and, lastly, capital delta (finite difference). In 1736, Euler had come up with the idea of a graph when he held the ability to solve a problem in ââ¬Å"recreational mathematicsâ⬠.He had proven that it was not possible to go to a route visiting the seven bridges of the German town of Konigsberg only, and not more than, once. A Hamiltonian Circuit is a tour that begins at a vertex of a graph and visits each vertex exactly once, and then returns to where it had originated. (Malkevitch, 35) This theory is named after Sir William Rowan Hamilton, an Irish mathematician and astronomer, who lived from 1805 to 1865. Much like Euler, Hamilton was considered a prodigy except as a child. He had the ability to read four dialects (English, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin) by the time he reached the age of four. Additionally, he enjoyed writing poe try and was able to maintain close friendships with other well-known scholars such as Wordsworth and Coleridge. When he was just twenty-three years old, he became a Professor of Astronomy in Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. (Bowen Larry) He received the privilege of having Hamiltonian Circuits named after him because he was one of the first to study it.However, the first to discover this concept was Thomas Kirkman, a British minister with a liking for mathematics, who lived from 1806 to 1895. These two concepts are significant to the field of mathematics because they are the appropriate devices for analyzing problems where it is necessary to visit each vertex or edge only once. People often associate Hamiltonian Circuits with Euler Circuits because they both prohibit reuse. Euler Circuits prohibits the reuse of edges whereas Hamiltonian Circuits do not allow the reuse of vertices. Both Euler and Hamiltonian circuits are extremely beneficial in our daily lives because they are clas sified under problems known as ââ¬Å"routing problemsâ⬠. According to Professor Larry Bowen, ââ¬Å"routing problemsâ⬠are problems whose solution attempts the most efficient way(s) of routing things among different destinations. These problems may appear in various areas such as: transportation, communications, and the delivery of services. Without our realization, we use Euler problems on a day-to-day basis specifically in management science.Anytime it is necessary for services to go through streets or roads the Euler Circuit theory can be more resourceful. To show more specific problems, Euler circuits can help an individual while they are salting icy roads, plowing snow, mowing grass along highways, collecting garbage, collecting debris or leaves from urban curbs, inspecting railroad tracks for flaws, or reading electric meters at private houses. (Malkevitch, 19) We use them to indicate where the arrows on the streets should be placed, and in what direction they shoul d go in.In addition, we use them to construct the schedules for when parking is forbidden. Because parking-times are massive factors in street sweeping, it is essential find a circuit that visits streets when they are free of cars. Also, we use Euler circuits to distribute territory into multiple routes for street sweepers, parking officers, and sanitation workers. The objective is to find easy routes for them to travel by as well as taking traffic direction, number of lanes, parking-time restrictions, and divided routes into consideration. All of these examples are possible through management science, a field that most people would want to attain as a career in one day. (Malkevitch, Joseph) Just like Euler circuits problems, we essentially use Hamiltonian circuit problems on a daily basis as well specifically through the use of business efficiency. Hamiltonian circuits have many applications. The deliveries of mail and packages, or water meter inspections are done with the use of Ha miltonian circuit problems because it is necessary that they meet each vertex within a graph. Some examples of its regular uses are for inspecting traffic signals, for delivering mail to drop-off boxes, or for delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly. (Malkevitch, 35) In addition, an individual can use a Hamiltonian Circuit when they plan on going on a vacation. They would construct a graph of all the places they would like to visit and figure the distances between all of the places, and essentially they would be able to figure out which is the best possible route to take as well as with the shortest distance. As shown in the examples above, Euler and Hamiltonian circuits have made advancements to their field because they give individuals assistance in transportation, communications, and delivery of services. They give all of the following areas the ability to come up with routes in a well-organized, efficient fashion. On a personal level, these types of circuits have interested me n ot only because of the history of the individuals who created them, but also because of what these circuits are used for on a daily basis. At first, when I had learned about the topic in class I was only focused on solely the arithmetic and formulas of the problems. Later, while researching into their uses, I was then aware of how they can be used in real-life situations. With a background of this information, if I ever wish to pursue a career in management science or business efficiency, I will have a general idea of how it works. Overall, these circuits can teach an individual how mathematics comes into play in real-life situations. Works Cited 1. Bowen, Larry, Dr. ââ¬Å"Quick Summary. â⬠Quick Summary. The Language Of Young Children Essay - 2069 Words
The language of young children is behaviour. It is well documented that a secure attachment to a caregiver supports healthy cognitive development in children (Moretti Peled, 2004; Mikulineer, Shaver, Pereg, 2003; Scharf, Oshri, Eshkol, Pilowsky, 2014). This paper will first provide a description of attachment theory covering the key points. It will then provide an example from practice placement at Toogoolawa School where the theory has been applied. Following this a discussion of relevant issues relating to power, ethics and politics that have been observed. Finally, it will reflect on the experience and how it relates to my personal and professional values. At the core of attachment theory is the early relations between infant and the primary caregiver, usually the mother (Levy, Johnson, Clouthier, Scala, Temes, 2015). Attachment theory is based on the pioneering work of John Bowlby (1969, 1980, 1988) after a long and somewhat conflicted association with psychoanalysis (Holmes, 1993 p.62). Bowlbyââ¬â¢s theory of attachment was partly based on the findings of ethology and argued that attachment between infant and mother was not merely an instinct derived from feeding or infant sexuality as Freud and Klein first claimed, but was a psychological bond in its own right (Fitton, 2012). Attachment theory has been influenced by many theorists however, the key concepts of Attachment theory are; primary attachment relationship, proximity seeking, secure base, separationShow MoreRelatedLanguage For Young Children And The Early Stages Of Life Essay1751 Words à |à 8 PagesLanguage for young children allows them to communicate with others, therefore it is crucial that they develop language to communicate. Overview It is generally acknowledged that the procedure of education starts at birth and endures during the course of life. There are many perceive and have confidence with that education begins previous than this- as indication by several parents who play music or read to the baby, hoping that it will persuade and motivate the development of the child. Education is frequently making used to denote to ââ¬Å"formal educationâ⬠. Moreover, it conceals a variety of occurrences since formal learning up to the constructing of understanding and knowledge amidst of our day to day living. Eventually, every situation that we undergo aids or serves as a form of our education. Distinct people study and discover in distinct approaches and several things will have to be made clear several times in several distinct approaches before the majority of the students ââ¬Å"gets itâ⬠. Several students, unluckily, will never ââ¬Å"get itâ⬠in view of the fact that they donââ¬â¢t give any interest on it or have not able to learn sufficiently of the foundation knowledge of a prearranged subject to go forward to the next level. Each one of us receives informal education from several sources (see ââ¬Å"Educationâ⬠. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. August 25, 2006.à http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education). Thus, this informal education and formal education will lead us to bring change in our society by making new or advancements in our technologies, just like in the field of IT. *Development of the Educational System and its impact it had on Society* Through the progress in our educational system, we are able to improve our technologies which help us connect globally. Advance technology is part of the development of our educational system. Moreover, it also enhances our economic stability by engaging businesses globally using the advance technology that we have learned through our education. Information technology as defined by Ben Meadowcroft in his study that ââ¬Å"it is the technology that is utilized to store, manipulate, distribute or make information.à Several nonprofit and institutions are keen and enthusiastic to understand either developing technologies and the Internet posses an authentic positive impact on civil society and either nonprofits are taking hold of the chances to utilize technology in groundbreaking procedures in order to fulfill their assignment. On the other hand, technology can be able to utilize to gather together the people internationally around a shared cause to realize and accomplish world-changing outcomes far beyond the assurance of empowering nonprofit organizations in order to perform significant purposes like as fundraising, and recruiting unpaid workers more efficiently. In distinction to several of the undertakings expressed through William Galston, David Eisner declared that: ââ¬Å"the truly transformative impact that the Internet will have on nonprofits is specifically in the area of building community.â⬠James Austin stated that technology is redefining ââ¬Å"communityâ⬠while it is no longer concentrated on geography but then on another shared qualities which can connect people throughout cyberspace. He recommended a newfangled description of community ââ¬Å"a group of people bound together by shared activities, purpose, and values.â⬠As stated by Eisner, there are four inclinations that are unfavorable to understanding the internetââ¬â¢s influence in creating societies ÃËà There are more people who will discover and realize that it is easier to form supplementary associations as outcomes of the internet. ÃËà Inquiring each individual to give will become simple and uncomplicated since information and action can presently be incorporated. Example, contributors can read which regard the earthquake in India and then stretched and offer all at once through the use of internet. ÃËà Reports, fundraising, online societies and procedures to lend a hand, which Eisner called the ââ¬Å"cycle of engagement,â⬠will turn out to be frictionless, in view of the fact that the internet empowers people to learn regarding a dilemma and do something without delay and flawlessly. ÃËà By mean of networking, people can be able to perform simultaneously more carefully and thoroughly in high-quality information sharing and learning societies. You read "Development of the Education System and Society" in category "Papers" Online interaction gives a strong structural and administrative tool for advocacy operation and promotions. Mike Whitlam stated that ââ¬Å"As a communication tool, as campaigning tool, itââ¬â¢s incredible.â⬠But then, this strong association turn out to be a reality if not, nonprofit organizations posses the capacity to utilize technology. Eisner stated that: ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s really important is even where grants are related to technology,à à à grant makers need to take an interest in their granteeââ¬â¢s technological proficiency in the same way that they take an interest in their staff capability, their management, and their financial credibility.â⬠Turning to present inclinations in e-philanthropy, Austin declared that same as the Internet business world, the e-philanthropy society (with nonprofit and for profit) is undergoing distress labor pains. As Austin continued that there will be additional terminations and merging, but then the space will not disappear. The internet technology has irrevocably altered the philanthropic capital market. Austin was able to identify the four forces as the precarious shapers of the newfangled technology-based e-philanthropy society. Ant these are economic pressures, mistrust, clashing cultures and technology readiness. An article entitled ââ¬Å"education and Economic Developmentâ⬠stated that the development of the internet has taken along newfangled chances and enhanced communication to several businesses and people. Globally, IT expenditure is foretold to upsurge by 35 percent in 2010, as stated by the research firm IDC (Worldwide Black Book, 2004). As an outcome, the need will increase for extremely equipped individuals to administer and support IT systems. In United States of America, every year there is an increase in need for those work forces have been the topmost amongst the It sector. Moreover, in several emerging countries, get into training on the newest technologies is either inadequate or unobtainable. An absence of way in to technology and education regarding its use is one issue contributing to the ââ¬Å"gulfâ⬠amongst developed and developing economies. The said gulf is known as ââ¬Å"digital divideâ⬠(see ââ¬Å"Education and Economic developmentâ⬠http://www.cisco.com/web/about/ac227/ac111/cisco_and_society/education_and_economic_development.html). On the other hand, the article entitled ââ¬Å"Science Education System Standards stated that the science education system standards give standard for adjudicating the presentation of the modules of the science education system accountable for giving schools with essential financial and intellectual means. In spite of the recurrent usage of the terminology ââ¬Å"educational systemâ⬠, the sense is frequently ambiguous. States are element of a national education system and schools are included as elements of a local society which can comprise universities and colleges, parks and museums, laboratories, community organizations, various media, businesses and nature centers. The initial purpose of the science system is to provide society with technically and methodically well-educated citizens. Resources and information invigorate the system. The informationââ¬â¢s nature-the greatness of resources- and the tracks along which they move are managed and regulated through policies which are limited and controlled in instruments like judicial rulings, legislation and budgets. Systems can be characterized in an assortment of procedures which depend on the intention and the data to be communicated. An example of this is in figure below which portrays the overlap amongst three systems which persuade the preparation of science education. This kind of illustration is a cue that actions done in sole system have insinuations not only in science education but then again for other systems too (see ââ¬Å"Science Education System Standardsâ⬠. http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/8.html). The overlap of three systems which persuade science education Organization of performance amongst the systems can work for as a strong and influential force for alteration. But then, if performances are at cross intentions, their results and influences can be refuted and invalidated and make waste and conflict. The overlap in the figure above demonstrates that everyday pursuits of science classrooms are persuaded and manipulated indirectly and directly through several organizations that are themselves systems. National organizations and societies, private sector special- interest groups and government agencies at the local, regional, state, and national levels are three amongst many. Organizations have senior manager officer and administering body that eventually are accountable for the activities of the organizations and persuade on science education. The sovereignty of government organizations to persuade classroom science originates from two sources and these are the: (1) legislative, judicial authority or constitutional, and (2) economic and political act. à Since education is not precisely brought up as a federal power in United States Constitution, authority intended for education exists in states or regional. Federal dollars might be sought out for precise usages but since dollars move through state organizations to local regions, their usage is lay open to alteration to meet up the state purposes. State education agencies usually have more unswerving effect on science classroom pursuits compared with federal organizations. The science education is also considered as a network to make easy thinking which concerns the systemââ¬â¢s several interacting modules. Science education systemââ¬â¢s components aid an assortment of purposes which persuade the classroomââ¬â¢s practice of science education. The functions usually made the decision at the state-but there are times that the local will do- level comprises the substance of the school science course, the traits and qualities of the science program, the character of science teaching, and evaluation practices (see ââ¬Å"Science Education System Standardsâ⬠. http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/8.html) Several distinct organizations and trustworthy individuals interrelate. The illustration below portrays in what way is each individual and every agency from distinct systems interrelates in the groundwork, certification and science teachersââ¬â¢ employment. Science education systemââ¬â¢s components which have a main influence on teacherââ¬â¢s certificate match in four classifications and these are: (1) professional societies like the American Association of Physics, American Geological Institute, National Science Teachers Association,à National Association of Biology Teachers and American Chemical Society; (2) program-accrediting agencies like the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education which confirms teacher educations programs and National Board for Professional Teaching Standards which confirms teachers; (3) higher educationââ¬â¢s organizations functioning within and cross state, local levels and national. Professional societies normally are not supposed of as accrediting agencies but rather their membership criterions explain what a professional is. The illustration below was taken from ââ¬Å"science Education System Standardsâ⬠. http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/nses/8.html. A research study published in February 2005 entitled ââ¬Å"the Impact of the State Higher Education System on the Texas Economyâ⬠and written by Carole Keeton Strayhorn explained that ââ¬Å"Higher education has an important impact or effect on the Texasââ¬â¢ economy, increasing the Texas economic engine with 33.2 billion USD each year. Seeing that the system obtains just about 6 billion USD yearly in the state general revenue and regional property tariffs, each dollar capitalize in the higher education system of the state finally returns 5.50 USD to the Texas economy. This is an extraordinary and notable return, even for all-or-nothing technology instigation. But then, when it comes to the Texas higher education system, the risk factors are much higher. In favor of, the investors in Texas are capitalizing in the most significant business enterprise for the preparation of the young Texansââ¬â¢ future. With this fundamental role, state higher education funding is bringing up the rear ground to other state service industries. After regulating for inflation, expenditure on public protection and alterations increased 223 percent in the previous 15 years at the same time as real higher education spending increased only 44 percent throughout the same span of time. This study of Carole Keeton Strayton scrutinizes the economic impact of higher education by two extensive avenues. The initial and most direct impact is the supplementary sales, profits and service made by external dollars being brought into the Texas economy. The second is the long-term function higher education participates in escalating the capacity of the economy of the state by a more well-informed and beneficial work force. Her research presented that $3.1 billion in yearly student, investigation and health care-correlated higher education spending from out-of-state possessions is spent and re-spent by the Texas consumers and businesses every year to sum up $10.1 billion in economic amount produced. Furthermore, the Texas higher education system frequently links with the private sector to make occupations and enhance the Texansââ¬â¢ quality of life. Seeing together the profits and productivity-based methods, the Texas higher education system finally increases and multiplies the productivity capacity of the Texas economy having the average of 23.1 billion USD every year. Adding together the ââ¬Å"supply-sideâ⬠of profit to the $10.1 billion impacts from out-of-sate spending take along the sum total impact of the higher education system on the economy of Texas to 33.2 billion USD every year. The contribution of higher education to the Texas economy is considerable and significant than to other businesses. In reality, the totality of three years of the economic impact of the higher education exceeds Texasââ¬â¢ 72 billion USD gas and oil business or 62 billion USD high machinery and equipment business. Eventually, a few of higher education victories demonstrate the function of higher education in expanding and intensifying occupations and the eminence of life in every Texan individual (see Strayhorn, C. K. ââ¬Å"The Impact of the State Higher Education System on the Texas Economyâ⬠. February 2005. http://www.window.state.tx.us/specialrpt/highered05/). In addition, the Texas higher education system comprises of 145 private and public colleges, health-related organizations and teaching centers and universities, comprising 44 private organizations and 101 state-supported. The admission every in university and college in Texas in 2004ââ¬â¢s fall was about 1.2 million and was anticipated to range at least 1.3 million students in 2015. Texas, as one of the most populated states, the students depend heavily upon public instead of the private higher education organizations. As stated by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, greater than 90 percent or about 1,064,620 students are admitted at its publicly-funded organizations which comprise universities (483,645), 57 community colleges and other two-year organizations (565,839), 35 and nine public health-related organizations (15,136). à The Texasââ¬â¢ public higher education is funded by a mixture of student fees, tuition, clinic and hospital revenue and other local endowments (see Strayhorn, C. In light of the above mentioned factors, some of the major threats and opportunities to gain sustainable competitive advantage may include: The economic recovery in UK facilitates Tesco to enhance its market share by providing quality products at good prices but the previous recession has changed spending of customers which has reduced the significance of large super stores. Hence, the threat of the entry of new competitors is very low (Hill and Jones, 2012). Intensity of Competitive Rivalry: The intensity of competitive rivalry in regard to retail industry is quite high as Sainsbury and Tesco are neck to neck competitors but the recent survey has revealed that the sales of Sainsbury has slowed down. On the other hand, Aldis sales have seen a huge hike in its sales which enhances the intensity of competitive rivalry in UK. Bargaining Power of Buyers: The population of UK has juggled with recent financial crisis due to which people have become very aware of their money and they want to get more in less money which states that the bargaining power of buyers in UK is generally high (Pycraft, 2000). Bargaining Power of Suppliers: The bargaining power of suppliers is low as no one wants to lose great commercial contracts with huge supermarkets. Hence, the suppliers make sure to provide goods at minimum and legal prices to companies like Tesco (Tesco at a glance, 2013). The company has kept its prices low by enhancing employee efficiency, designing effective delivery system and avoiding wastes. Tesco has set up a global sourcing team to pick non-food products from around the world, and thus, by procuring from developing countries like China and India, the company keep its prices low (DIW econ Economic Bulletin, 2011). The website of the company is its another strategic capability that allows it to offer sheer convenience and comfort to customers. Moreover, the supply chain system of the company has been designed in a manner that effectively connects its stores with Tesco.com. The information technology (IT) of the company has been organisational competency since long as the company being the first to introduce RFID technology in its supply chain and has also implemented lean management for eradicating waste, improving quality and reducing price (Zhao, 2014). Another prominent competency of Tesco is its strong financial assets and market goodwill. It is considerable that the goodwill of the company in 2014 3,771, which in turn increased to 3,795 in 2015. Also, Tesco has introduced cross docking operation and used collaborative plan, forecasting and replenishment (CPFR) for supporting its inventory management. This has skilfully allowed the company to shun the need to store and lessen the inventory holding (Tesco Plc Annual Report and Financial Statements 2015, 2015). The company also provides the platform of online shopping to its customers with the help of its subsidiary, Tesco.com. Among all its stores in different countries of the world, UK is its largest market which has been operating under four banners since long time namely; Extra, Superstore, Metro and Express. Apart from this, the company ensures that its activities do not harm any element of environment with the help of effective measures and environment sustainability. The business function of Tesco involves identifying, scanning, analysing, forecasting and then producing a product to suit the choices of customers. On the other hand, Tesco knows how to deal with major threats and take effective measures time to time in order to overcome them and to utilising the approaching opportunities for the betterment of the company. The overall analysis shows that the business function of Tesco is very fruitful for the customers as well as the employees of the company (Partridge and Sinclair-Hunt, 2008). Basis of Competitive Strategy Bowmans Strategy Clock explicates eight different strategies, such as no frills, low price, hybrid, differentiation, focussed differentiation, increased price/standard value, increased price/low value and standard price/low value, which companies can adopt for attaining competitive advantage on customers (Bowman and Faulkner 1996). Source: (Bowman and Faulkner 1996) From the eight strategies, Tesco has adopted hybrid strategy as it offer products at low price to consumer, but at a higher perceived value as compared to its competitors. Tesco has achieved a market reputation of charging highly fair prices for high superior quality goods. Tescos hybrid strategy is the basis of its competitive advantage as the prices of its products are low and customers are also assured of the quality and value. This combination in turn creates customer loyalty for the company. The company has attained this strategy by making its supply chain highly effective and efficient, i.e. free of wastes and timely delivery of products. The company also source high quality raw materials from developing economies at cheap prices so that it can offer equally low price goods to customers. Tesco has also pertinently used technology for sustaining its hybrid strategy by offering products direct to customers and eliminating any third party so that prices can be kept low (Baroto, Ab dullah and Wan, 2012). Strategic Choice and Strategy Evaluation Key Directions for Future Growth for the Company by using Ansoffs Matrix Figure: Ansoff Matrix Market Penetration: For market penetration, Tesco has to extend its products and services to the UK market, which in turn will help it in improving its sales. It is notable that the sales of Tesco in the UK have declined in past few years. Thus, it is essential for Tesco to restore its competitiveness not just by using its products by also by reinvesting in its stores to offer a unique experience to customers (Thomson and Baden-Fuller, 2010). New Product Development: Although, there are risks in introducing new product, however if a new product is introduced with utter care and research, it can bring huge returns. Tesco can rely on the expansion of non-food products. The company should focus on bringing new financial services to the market for regaining consumer interest. The retailing industry is currently going through overcapacity, and thus innovation is the major driver for growth and development (Wit and Meyer, 2010). New Market Development: Tesco should consider expanding to new markets like India, China, Japan and so on. It is notable that entry to new markets will act a key growth driver in Tescos revenues. Although, Tesco has expanded to Asian markets, but a more aggressive expansion will benefit the company as Asian markets are demonstrating a rise in consumer spending and are also demographically highly prospective markets. Therefore, for new market development Tesco should consider starting new and unique stores in Asian countries like China, India, Japan, and Singapore and so on (Sumer, 2010). Diversification: Diversification is one of the riskiest growth options as it diversifies the company completely from its current product line. In this regard, Tesco can expand its diversification of coffee shops to Asian market. The company has already diversified to different new products and services, such as financial services, and hence, this new diversification will allow the company to gain large market share (Cuthbertson, 2012). Selection of one of the Options of Ansoffs Matrix In light of the above options, it is noteworthy that in terms of market penetration and market development, Tesco is already working enough. It is now time to come up with novel product, and as a result, diversification is the best suitable option for Tesco for future growth. Suitability Diversification strategy is suitable because it is taking advantage of the external opportunities will minimise the threat of low sales and extensive competition. It is important to note that demand of coffee is increasing in Asian countries especially in China, and thus adopting this strategy will benefit the company. This strategy can also be built on the internal strengths of the company of an effective supply chain management and price efficiency. Acceptability Acceptability is related to whether the expected results of the proposed option will comply with stakeholders expectation or not (Jhonson et.al, 2011). The key stakeholders of Tesco are: Employees: require job security, safe environment and future growth, which diversification will bring Suppliers: want timely payment and demand. This can be done as diversification will enhance companys revenues Shareholders: demand high returns on shares, which is possible with better revenues by using diversification strategy Customers: want quality products and reasonable price and the company can offer this by utilising its competencies. Feasibility This factor is related to the capabilities and competencies of Tesco (Johnson, et al, 2011). On the basis of the internal analysis, it has been observed that Tesco has potent capabilities that will help the company (Johnson, et al, 2011). The company effectively used IT, its hybrid business strategy and differentiation of products and services will allow it to implement this strategy. Also, the club card scheme will enable the company to build a loyal customer base.
